Pumps are an essential part of your spa! Spa Pumps are specially designed to move the water in the spa and power the spa jets.

It is important to know that spas usually have two pumps installed.

The circulation pump in a spa operates continuously to move your water slowly throughout the spa system constantly moving the water in your spa enables your water to be consistently heated, filtered thoroughly by your filtration system and evenly sanitised and treated. A circulation pump operates at a low RPM and is reasonably quiet.

On the other hand, the booster pump powers those power-hungry spa jets to increases the flow rate of water in your spa. They are particularly used in larger spa systems like swim spas, where the water has a longer distance to travel. The booster pump is usually larger than the circulation pump.

A dual-speed pump will have two columns on the specification plate on the side of the pump, showing the low speed and high speed power output (wattage or horsepower), input current (amps).

It is worth noting that it is very important to get a spa pump that’s sized right for your spa. You can’t just get the biggest available size and expect it to push out powerful (and relaxing!) jets of water! The internal plumbing must be adequate as a too-strong pump will be limited by the pipes and can even cause leaks or even damage to your spa!

Making sure you choose the correct pump for your spa is crucial for the safety, water maintenance, and longevity of your spa or hot tub.

Factors to consider when purchasing a spa pump:

Voltage - Always check the voltage rating before buying your pump.
Horsepower - Check your existing pump and make sure that you don’t go UNDER or OVER what you currently have installed.
Single Speed or Dual Speed Spa Pumps? A lot of factors depend on the model of the spa and the existing jets installed. A single-speed pump just operates at one speed and in many cases, is much lower cost than a two speed pump.

A dual-speed pump can be used for both a circulation pump and a booster pump. The low speed setting is usually used for circulation mode, while the high speed setting is used for boost mode. So if you’re looking for that additional power push (while lowering your power consumption) when you just want to relax in your spa a little without the jets, then a dual-speed spa pump can be the best option.
